South African organisations operate in an environment that is fast
changing due to digital advancement, economic challenges, social
complexities, and changing employee and customer
values/expectations. In this environment, successful organisations
empower talented employees to work in teams and make pivotal
decisions that lead to innovation and exceptionally high
performance. Success for these organisations is not by chance but
is the result of adopting carefully planned and sophisticated
interventions into the organisational structure, leadership and
management orientations, culture, and processes and behaviours. In
this respect, Organisational behaviour: a contemporary South
African perspective provides a solid and scientific foundation for
developing an integrated and holistic understanding of the
individual and group processes in the modern organisation.
Organisational behaviour explores expectations that organisations
and employees have of each other. It addresses contemporary issues
related to organisational culture, change, engagement, performance
excellence, changing communication technology, transformational and
authentic leadership, diversity, business ethics, team excellence
and globalisation. It contains many encounters, discussion
questions, practical exercises and case studies with a southern
African orientation to stimulate self-study, debate and reflective
thinking. Organisational behaviour is aimed not only at aspiring HR
practitioners and managers, but also at established professionals
who need to stay updated, irrespective of their field and nature of
their organisation.
22 out of the 26 Chapters are available Open Access on Elgaronline
under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 License. The complete Handbook
containing all 26 chapters is available on Google Play (guide price
GBP10) see link in 'More Information' below. The Handbook of
Sociological Science offers a refreshing, integrated perspective on
research programs and ongoing developments in sociological science.
It highlights key shared theoretical and methodological features,
thereby contributing to progress and cumulative growth of
sociological knowledge. Reflecting 'unity in diversity', chapters
explore a wide variety of research fields, ranging from cultural
capital, migration, social networks, gender inequality, historical
sociology and ethnography to the intersection of sociology and the
life sciences. Examining basic methodological standards for theory
construction and empirical research, the Handbook exemplifies
commonalities between research programmes within these fields. The
contributors also explore rigorous sociology related to theory
construction, empirical research, and methods, including
statistical modelling and the integration of theoretical and
empirical research. Forward-thinking and original, the Handbook
concludes by illustrating the common core of rigorous sociology,
how it can contribute to understanding societal problems and to
policy making, and how research into sociological science can
continue to thrive in the future. Accessible and engaging, this
Handbook will be invaluable for scholars and researchers of
sociology and sociological theory, research methods in sociology
and social policy, and comparative social policy. Exploring new
developments and applications, it will also act as a useful
reference guide for policy makers. The Handbook will likewise be an
important resource for teaching advanced courses and training
graduate students.

Every great dream starts with a dreamer. Megan's dream is to build
a light aircraft with other teenagers and fly it from Cape Town to
Cairo. Her aim is to inspire children in other African countries to
follow their dreams. In 2018 twenty inexperienced teenagers from
various backgrounds were provided with hands-on experience in
engineering and building an aircraft. They assembled a Sling-4
aircraft from start to finish within three weeks, under the
guidance and supervision of a group of senior engineers.
Organisations are essentially social entities whose effectiveness
depends on the contribution and affective commitment of people.
Successful organisations do not develop by chance, but are rather
the result of carefully planned interventions into their structure,
leadership and management orientations, culture, processes and
behaviours. Organisational behaviour: a contemporary South African
perspective provides a solid and scientific foundation for
understanding, predicting, evaluating and managing individual and
group behaviour in organisations. Organisational behaviour explores
the expectations that organisations and employees have of each
other. It addresses contemporary issues related to business ethics,
systems psychodynamics, engagement, performance excellence,
changing communication technology, transformational and authentic
leadership, diversity and globalisation. It contains encounters,
discussion questions, practical exercises and case studies to
stimulate self-study, debate and reflective thinking. Updated
lecturer support material is also available. Organisational
behaviour is aimed at aspiring as well as established managers and
business owners, irrespective of their field.

"Whether it is a behind-the-scenes look at how these classic styles
came to be or taking a front-seat look at how iconic women taught
us how what it means to accessorize, this is a must-have for
fashion lovers." - BELLA magazine Women love handbags because they
are a perfect vehicle - not just for keys, credit cards, and
lipstick, but also their dreams and desires. Luxury labels made the
humble bag into a billion-dollar business in the 20th century, but
the bag is more than just a status symbol. Because it is constantly
being reinvented, it wields a greater influence on everyday fashion
than any hemline or silhouette. For the Love of Bags is a homage to
the power of the handbag: from icons like the Kelly Bag, the first
"must-have" item ever, to popular Paris fashion house labels and
the latest Instagram stars, this book details the history of the
"it" bag and decodes the messages handbags communicate. Text in
English, German and French.
In this tribute to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, Karl-Werner
Antrack looks at her life and those that affected it. He looks in
detail at the many conspiracy theories surrounding her death, and
how it has affected those that Diana left behind, and the
'revelations' revealed by those she is said to have trusted while
alive. The state of the world post-Diana is also looked at
including the war on Iraq, and Britain's relations with the US.
Altogether, this book is a useful compilation of much of the hype
which has surrounded the death of Princess Diana, but at the heart
of it we must remember she was a loving mother who cared for all
those less fortunate than herself, and it is hopefully this memory
that shall live on...
At a time when the planet's wildlife faces countless dangers,
international environmental law continues to overlook its evolving
welfare interests. This thought-provoking book provides a crucial
exploration of how international environmental law must adapt to
take account of the growing recognition of the intrinsic value of
wildlife. Animal Welfare and International Environmental Law offers
compelling and timely arguments in favour of wildlife's inherent
worth and proposes a progressive development of the law in response
to its needs and interests. Taking into account recent trends in
bioethics and conservation, these critical discussions of wildlife
welfare have dramatic implications for the future of sustainable
development and sustainable use. The book challenges assumptions by
taking a perspective which decentres the needs of humans and
instead emphasises the growing need to protect wildlife with
compassion and care. This book will prove invaluable to both
students and scholars of environmental law, animal law and
international law more widely. It will also appeal to policymakers,
legal scholars and NGOs dealing with the imminent needs of the
earth's wildlife. Contributors include: D. Bilchitz, M. Bowman, S.
Riley, J. Schaffner, W. Scholtz, K. Sykes, S. White
The landmark guide to malting and brewing science is available in
English for the first time Humans have been producing fermented
beverages for at least ten thousand years. Chief among them is
beer, which has arguably never been more popular than it is at this
point in history. The United States alone boasts more than 9,500
breweries, a number which has risen steadily as the market for
craft beer continues to grow in that country. Thus, maltsters and
brewers there and around the world are constantly looking for ways
to hone their skills to create products of the highest quality as
consistently as possible. With the detailed information presented
in this book, they will not only be able to reacquaint themselves
with the basic tenets of their profession but will also acquire an
in-depth scientific foundation and a wide range of practical
knowledge in all aspects of advanced malting and brewing. This
landmark work on malting and brewing, originally entitled Abriss
der Bierbrauerei, is currently in its eighth edition and has
hitherto only been offered in the German language. However, it is
now finally available for the first time in translation, as an
unabridged and updated English edition. Applied Malting and Brewing
Science is a reference for those interested in any facet of malt
and beer production, including all of the most recent technical
innovations in equipment and processes. This book represents the
collective knowledge amassed over many decades of research by
Ludwig Narziss in his tenure as Professor at the Chair for Brewing
Technology at Weihenstephan. Readers of Applied Malting and Brewing
Science will find the following: Comprehensive treatment of topics
covering raw materials, malt and wort production, fermentation,
packaging and much more A team of authors with decades of
experience in the fields of malting and brewing science, both in
academia and in their application in the industry A design which
facilitates use of the book as both a student textbook and as a
practical guide Written by the late Ludwig Narziss and his team,
Applied Malting and Brewing Science is an indispensable source for
students at any level in related scientific disciplines and for
anyone working in the malting and brewing industry.

STRATA celebrates modernist design in multiple ways. Its vast use
of glass blurs the inside with the outside. Its deep overhanging
eaves intersecting with each other at various angles recalls the
best work of Wright. Its expansive glass calls to mind Neutra’s
work and his insistence on architectural transparency. The
house’s imaginative interiors bespeak comfort and solace needed
for days spent in the unforgiving Arizona sun. Its construction
required extensive work on the site before the first slab was
poured, a testament to the talent of the construction team.
Whenever and wherever possible, native stone and wood were used to
give the house a sense of authenticity. The sliding glass doors
located at multiple points allow the owners to have delightful
dinner parties just as the sun is setting and the dry air is
cooling – neither indoors nor outdoors, but a vivid combination
of the two.

World War II action drama. Two months before the events of D-Day in
August 1944, a team of British and American soldiers are deployed
behind enemy lines in an attempt to recover information from a
German officer that could prelude an Allied victory and bring a
swift end to the war. But as their plans go awry the team are
forced to retreat back to the front with the stolen information.
With tensions rising within the group and a German battalion
pursuing them, the troops must unite in a race for their survival.
How does psychological theory help you to understand, shape and
influence work behaviour and relationships? How does workplace
learning take place? How do you assess workplace values and
attitudes? Introduction to Work Psychology 3e features the
practical application of theory using relevant workplace examples.
The textbook examines industrial and organisational psychology
within the context of the South African business environment. Its
strength lies in a sound balance between the discussion of
psychology, industrial psychology and human resource management.
The content is written in an accessible, academic style, with a
focus on African perspectives, examples and indigenous knowledge
systems. Each chapter includes learning objectives; boxed features
that illustrate the theory within each chapter; self-assessment
tasks for students to measure their progress, and a summary and
reflection section that highlights the implications of the theory
in practice. Introduction to Work Psychology 3e is suitable for
first-year students of industrial psychology at universities, and
first-year students of personnel management at universities of
technology. The textbook is also very accessible and suitable for
service courses, for example nursing.
Botanical gardens represent people's centuries-old fascination with
exotic plants. Werner Pawlok has photographically explored special
tropical greenhouses within Europe and shows us here his most
beautiful pictures in his usual colourfully expressive manner -
from the Palm House in the Botanical Garden in Copenhagen, to Kew
Gardens in London, and the Great Palm House at Schönbrunn. The
scent of the warm earth and the breath of the plants can almost be
felt when looking at the large-format and colourful pictures.
Fascinating interplays of colour allow the filigree architecture of
famous master builders and the impressive plants to shine in a
special light. Pawlok, self-taught and intuitive photographer,
captures these magical places in a fascinating way. Each photo is a
work of art in itself. Interesting texts about the cultural history
of greenhouses, from the simple wooden construction to the
efficient glass dome, accompany this extraordinary photo book. Let
yourself be inspired by Pawlok's high-end photographs and embark on
a nostalgic journey. As Pawlok himself puts it: "Being allowed to
enter these wonderful glass palaces and explore their
green-scented, tropical interiors with my camera felt like an
expedition into the heart of the 19th century." Text in English and
German.
In Germany, the years immediately following World War II call
forward images of obliterated cities, hungry refugees, and ghostly
monuments to Nazi crimes. The temptation of despair was hard to
resist, and to contemporary observers the road toward democracy in
the Western zones of occupation seemed rather uncertain. Drawing on
a vast array of American, German, and other sources--diaries,
photographs, newspaper articles, government reports, essays, works
of fiction, and film--Werner Sollors makes visceral the experiences
of defeat and liberation, homelessness and repatriation,
concentration camps and denazification. These tales reveal writers,
visual artists, and filmmakers as well as common people struggling
to express the sheer magnitude of the human catastrophe they
witnessed. Some relied on traditional images of suffering and
death, on Biblical scenes of the Flood and the Apocalypse. Others
shaped the mangled, nightmarish landscape through abstract or
surreal forms of art. Still others turned to irony and black humor
to cope with the incongruities around them. Questions about guilt
and complicity in a totalitarian country were raised by awareness
of the Holocaust, making "After Dachau" a new epoch in Western
history. The Temptation of Despair is a book about coming to terms
with the mid-1940s, the contradictory emotions of a defeated
people--sorrow and anger, guilt and pride, despondency and
resilience--as well as the ambiguities and paradoxes of Allied
victory and occupation.
People, plants and animals all need rain. But the ground can take
in only so much. Too much, and the land will flood. Farms and
cities can be damaged. People must move to dry ground until,
slowly, the water soaks into the earth. Learn about floods, what we
can do and how to stay safe.
Redesigning the Welfare State argues that the current high level of
unemployment in Germany not only creates a major challenge for the
German welfare state, but is to a good extent caused by the way the
country's welfare system is designed. The authors review the public
debate on labour market reforms, which has been ongoing since 2002,
and discuss the first set of reforms that have been enacted since
then. As the reforms carried out so far fall short of what is
actually needed to increase employment and economic growth in the
Eurozone's largest economy, the authors introduce a proposal for a
more fundamental redesign of the German welfare state. With
comparative discussions of important elements of recent labour
market reforms in the US, the UK and the rest of Europe, this book
will appeal to all labour market researchers, and to those with an
interest in applied work and policy advising in Germany. It will
also appeal to decision makers and experts at international
organisations and think tanks with a specialisation on Europe and
Germany.
The essays in this volume describe, analyse and compare the
achievements and the failures of societies that adopted
market-based economies within a democratic polity after a long
period of communist rule (Russia and Eastern Europe) or military
authoritarianism (Latin America). Together, they also trace the
rocky course of liberal economic policies over the whole twentieth
century. Area experts from various disciplines seek to establish
the extent to which the historical experience of the several
countries explains successful transitions as well as the less
successful efforts to adapt institutions to the needs of a market
economy. The papers further show the dilemmas faced in both Eastern
Europe and Latin America in reconciling the efficiency benefits of
market economies and the need to achieve or maintain socially
acceptable patterns of income distribution among the strata of
income receivers. In addition to the essays themselves, comments
are provided to further explore specific issues. Researchers and
students in economics, economic history, political science and
regional studies, and others interested in the economics of
transition to a market system will find this comprehensive
collection an invaluable resource.
